The history of ice cream dates back to ancient times. Early writings tell that Alexander the Great enjoyed snow and ice flavored with honey and nectar. But it wasn’t until the 1700’s that ice cream was introduced in America, and the love affair began.
In 1903, Italo Marchiony, an Italian immigrant who sold ice cream from a push cart in the streets of New York City, is said to have invented the first ice cream cone in America. A year later, E.W. Hamwi, an immigrant from Syria, created the waffle cone at the St. Louis World’s Fair. As the story goes, Hamwi was selling thin, waffle-shaped cakes when an ice cream vendor at a nearby stand ran out of bowls. Hamwi shaped his cakes into cones that could hold the ice cream.
Today, our love affair with ice cream continues, with the average American consuming more than 3 gallons of ice cream a year. While vanilla remains the most popular flavor, Healthy Choice ice cream comes in a variety of indulgent flavors, from Butter Pecan to Turtle Fudge Cake--enjoy the cool sweet pleasures of ice cream!
